Sarah McLean, best-selling author of Soul-Centered: Transform Your Life in 8 Weeks with Meditation (Hay House 2012), is an inspiring, contemporary meditation teacher who makes meditation accessible to everyone. Deepak Chopra recommends her work saying it’s “entertaining, informative, and inspiring for even the most experienced meditator."

Her mission is to support those who seek fulfilling lives, better health, inner peace, and ways to manage their stress through the programs she has created for the McLean Meditation Institute.

She's been pursuing her own meditation practice since the late 80s  and has been teaching meditation and mind body health programs since the early 90s. She’s taught thousands of people worldwide to meditate, helping them to reduce stress, find fulfillment, and live with more peace, confidence, and happiness.

Her interest in mind/body health began with her training as a medic and behavioral specialist in the U.S. Army in the 1980s where she was trained to treat soldiers with post traumatic stress disorder.

Sarah McLean, Director of the Sedona Meditation Training CompanyThough she learned zazen, chakra meditations, and various relaxation and visualization practices in college, it wasn't until 1990 when she began her formal daily meditation practice. It was then she also began her work with mind/body health pioneer, Dr. Deepak Chopra.

She lived in the Maharishi Ayurveda Mind/Body Health Center in Lancaster, Massachusetts where Deepak Chopra was the medical director. The center was run by the Transcendental Meditation organization.

There, she studied the ancient practices of Ayurveda, an ancient holistic healing approach which suggests that health and healing begins with awareness, and that meditation is the first step towards creating balance in the mind and body. Ayurveda's healing modalities include: meditation, yoga, daily and seasonal routines, diet, exercise, identifying mind/body types (doshas) and imbalances, purification therapies, sound therapy, aroma therapy, and more. She furthered her studies with Dr. John Douillard, an expert pulse diagnostician at the center. Later, she attended the Ayurvedic College at Mount Madonna with Dr. Vasant Lad. 

She also practiced various advanced meditation techniques including the Bliss Technique, and the TM Siddhis. She was the president of the TM Siddhis' class.

After Deepak Chopra was invited to bring meditation and ayurveda to one of the top health care organizations in California, she moved to California to become the founding education director of his center for wellbeing. As the Education Director at the Chopra Center, Sarah provided educational programs on holistic healing modalities and was one of the first to become certified as a Chopra Center educator. She taught teach mind/body health programs; among them Perfect Health, the Ayurvedic Lifestyle Course, and Primordial Sound Meditation, an ancient form of silent, mantra meditation. She went on to be one of the lead trainers of Primordial Sound Meditation Teachers.

While at the Chopra Center, Sarah also has had the good fortune of studying intensively with best-selling authors Debbie Ford, author of The Secrets of the Shadow, and Margot Anand, author of Everyday Ecstasy. 

After 8 years of working with Deepak Chopra, she took a a six month sabbatical. First she traveled to the south of India - living in a traditional ashram where she practiced bhakti yoga and chanting for months. And in the north of India studying with Tibetan Buddhist monks in Dharamsala and teaching English to Tibetan Buddhist nuns.

Sarah returned to the states.  For almost two years was a resident and Tenzo (cook) at Yokoji Zen Mountain Center, a traditional Zen Buddhist training center in the San Jacinto mountains of Southern California. She spent days and weeks at a time in silence and meditation, she took Jukai (traditional Buddhist vows) and gave initial instruction in the sitting meditation practices (zazen) to new students.  She also studied with Zen Buddhist teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh and received the Five Mindfulness Trainings.

She left the monastery to serve as the personal assistant to Gary Zukav, a self-proclaimed secular monk in Mount Shasta, California and author of the best -seller, Seat of the Soul.  She was then asked to direct Byron Katie's School of the Work. Sarah travelled worldwide with Katie as she shared the self-inquiry process called The Work in the 10-day schools.

In 2001, Sarah moved to Sedona, Arizona and eventually founded the Sedona Meditation Training Company, now known as the McLean Meditation Institute which offers meditation teacher certification programs, retreats, meditation training and immersion in various meditation practices to enhance mind/body health and self-awareness.

Sarah is a sought-after presenter has been invited to lead self-discovery retreats and programs at world class getaways as Miraval Resort in Tucson, Esalen Institute in Big Sur, and at the Omega Institute in New York. Organizations such as Proctor & Gamble, Young Presidents' Organizations, and the Thunderbird School of Global Management have asked her to inspire their executives.

She's been featured in the New York Times, Huffington Post, Chicago Tribune, and has taught meditation on national media outlets including Fox Health News. Sarah is a frequent contributor to health and lifestyle publications. She was voted Arizona's favorite meditation leader by readers of Natural Awakenings and was awarded the Trailblazer recognition by the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO). 

Sarah's also a dedicated environmentalist. She served on the board of a local environmental organization Keep Sedona Beautiful a group dedicated to preserving the wonder of Sedona, and was the recipient of the Sustainable Arizona Service Leadership Award. She is committed to being a green business too. From insisting on using recycled paper, compostable cups, and recycled packaging for her CD Meditate, to shopping locally, she also donates proceeds from her programs and products to organizations committed to saving our natural resources.
